UI / UX Apprentice

We're a tight-knit crew of designers and developers who use technology to deliver new superpowers to our clients. We need more help on the design side!

We're looking for a thoughtful and curious UX designers to join as an intern. You'll be paid to work with senior team members to solve real client problems, to build beautiful and useful interfaces, to fight for our end users, and to keep our engineers honest about font weights. We're heavy on developers now, so you'll have an outsized impact on the design output of Brand New Box.

As an apprentice at Brand New Box, you will develop your communication, interpersonal and technical skills. Every apprentice receives tons of exposure to client projects, making Brand New Box a great environment for kick-starting a career.

The apprentice experience includes a short series of educational projects, culminating in designing a niche product from scratch. Then you'll be ready to join in on designing for client projects. You're encouraged to advance your personal development through continued education and learning directly from full time BNB team.

You will also work directly with clients and end users to research problems, identify needs, and discover solutions. You'll need to be comfortable engaging with other professionals in an ego-free way, and get really good at listening and documenting what you find.

You’ll communicate directly with clients both in writing and verbally. You’ll think through what you’re designing from the viewpoint of end users and the product owners, always paying attention to the details. We work iteratively, with a short feedback loop so you’ll get to see the results of your effort go out into the world - and immediately impact the end users of our products.

Requirements

• Portfolio of design work! This should show us how you can create a coherent experience for users, and execute that visually.
• Willingness to give and accept constructive criticism and rapidly adapt to feedback
• A positive attitude, a sense of humor, and a desire to learn about the fascinating niches that our clients operate in.
• Proficiency in Sketch, Adobe, or Figma products
• Ability to collaborate with other designers, both within BNB and working within the brand requirements of our clients
• Strong understanding of basic UX principles like affordances, signifiers and feedback
• Strong understanding of UI considerations like hierarchy, typography, hierarchy and consistency
• Experience designing for flexible systems across different screen sizes and device environments
• You don't need to be a programmer, but it's helpful if you have a functional understanding of HTML, CSS, and javascript
